Internet Will Run Out Of IP Addresses Soon

Experts are saying that the Internet is running out of addresses, most likely by 2011. One problem is the slow adoption of a new system aimed at largely increasing the available pool.

Right now, the web is on IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4). This means 32-bit numbers are used, so there are about 4 billion addresses in supply. However, 94 percent of them have been assigned. Fortunately, there is a new system --- called IPv6. It uses 128-bit numbers and the number of available addresses will explode.

There is a dramatically increasing use of these addresses during the past years, thanks to the explosion of an array of Internet-connected items. But adoption is still slower than how quickly it needs to be.

Experts fear a black market for IPs as these addresses diminish. This will increase the cost of building out networks and establishing an Internet presence. It will also remove the decentralized nature of the internet as it gives power to those who hold open IP addresses.

Revenues: Microsoft Beats Apple This Year!

Revenues: Microsoft Beats Apple This Year!
© Robert Scoble
Microsoft reported in its quarterly earnings that they have made revenues of about $16.04 billion -- exceeding Wall Street estimates and up by 22 percent year over year.

This makes Microsoft about $300 million in front of Apple, so Cupertino will have to wait another quarter to surpass Microsoft on the revenue front.

Microsoft also made profits of about $4.52 billion for the quarter, far beyond Apple's $3.25 billion. This means Redmon is still making more money. This is due to the fact that a large portion of Microsoft's business is in software, where profit margins are much higher.

Microsoft's move to cloud services is well underway with offerings like Windows Azure and the Business Productivity Online Services. Also soon to be launched are Windows Phone 7 and Xbox Kinect.

Microsoft has also reported selling 175 million Windows 7 licenses. Its Bing search product has also gained search share for the 13th consecutive month.

Windows 7 Licenses: Selling Like Pancakes!

Microsoft recently announced it has sold over 25 million licenses of the Windows 7 operating system in the 29 days since June 23. That's a selling rate of about 10 copies of Windows 7 each second over the last month.

Windows 7 has sold over 175 million licenses to date and is easily the fastest selling operating system ever. It now runs on more than 15% of all PCs worldwide.

The very strong sales of Windows 7 and the introduction of Office 2010 pushed Microsoft's second quarter revenues to $16 billion -- a 22% higher than the same quarter in 2009. Windows revenue increased by more than $1 billion, up to $4.55 billion, according to the company.

Windows 7 has by far exceeded sales of its predecessor - Vista- which took 22 months to reach the same sales levels Windows 7 has.

Do You need a business plan?

Filed in archive Consultancy on June 10, 2010

Do You need a business plan?
Not everyone who starts and runs a business begins with a business plan, but it certainly helps to have one. If you are seeking funding from a venture capitalist, you will certainly need a comprehensive business plan that is well thought out and demonstrates sound business reasoning.

If you are approaching a banker for a loan for a start-up business, your loan officer may suggest a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan, which will require a business plan. If you have an existing business and are approaching a bank for capital to expand the business, they often will not require a business plan, but they may look more favorably on your application if you have one.

Reasons for writing a business plan include:

* Support a loan application
* Raise equity funding
* Define objectives and describe programs to achieve those objectives
* Create a regular business review and course correction process
* Define a new business
* Define agreements between partners
* Set a value on a business for sale or legal purposes
* Evaluate a new product line, promotion, or expansion

What Is Money?

Filed in archive Consultancy on June 2, 2010

What Is Money?
You see, there are many ideas of what people think money is.

Some say it is a form of measurement.
Yes, but a measurement of what? Wealth? In the olden days, people measured wealth by how many cows, sheep and horses they had. But do people measure wealth today by your cows and horses? How about slaves? Was there a time where manpower is considered a hot commodity? Are slaves worth anything today? Are your dollar bills sitting in the bank going to protect you if a recession strikes the country? No, wealth can not be measured by the dollar bill.

Some say it is a form of power.

Yes, money can give you power, but if you are stuck on a desert island forever with a trillion dollars, will that money mean squat to you? If someone offered you water and a helicopter to fly out of there, you would trade all your money in a split second, so money is not an accurate measurement of power - it heavily depends on how and wisely you use it.
